The language test Start Deutsch 1 can mainly be taken at the Goethe Institut in Manila. GI Manila conducts exams on a regular basis at their location at the Adamson Centre in Makati City, Metro Manila.

What should one expect during the SD1 exams?

Start Deutsch 1 is a language test for assessing adults' knowledge of German. It is conducted jointly by the Goethe-Institut (GI) and Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH (WBT). The exam is written and evaluated world-wide under uniform standards.
The Start Deutsch 1 examination documents the first level – A1 – of the six skill levels described in the Common European Framework for Languages. 'A' designates the ability to use language at a basic level.
SD1 consists of a written exam, comprising listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and an oral group exam.

1. Written Exam (duration: approx. 65 minutes)

• Listening comprehension
  (3 parts) You will listen to short texts – everyday conversations, public announcements, private and official telephone announcements – and have to extract relevant information.
• Reading comprehension
  (3 parts) You will read short texts – notes, small advertisements, information signs, posters – and have to extract relevant information.
• Writing
  (2 parts) You will insert missing data into a form and write a short personal message (letter, E-mail) according to pieces of information given.

2. Oral Exam (duration: approx. 15 minutes)
The examination consists of three parts:

• self-presentation
• ask for and provide information
• ask for favours and respond.

Registration for SD1 Examinations
Make sure that you're registered for the examinations accordingly. You may contact the Language Course Office of Goethe Institut Manila to obtain more information on how to register for the Start Deutsch 1 language test. Deadline for registration is at least 1 month before each examination.

• The examination fee for students of the Goethe-Institut is PHP 3,000. For non-GI students, the fee is PHP 4,000.

Sprach Institut Cebu prepares applicants for the SD1 exams through a systematically structured learning process utilizing exercise books, text books, visual aids, and audio files all based on the GER (Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR). Students will be trained to write, comprehend, speak the German language and respond accordingly when spoken to in German. SIC also offers free coaching at the end of a course and in preparation to the SD1 examinations.
